EVE Community Village | Potrero Block B
Client – Bridge Housing
Location – San Francisco, CA
Architect – HKIT Architects
Potrero Block B will be the second project to be completed within the Rebuild Potrero master plan, a project through HOPE SF. The development contains 157 apartments of affordable family housing and consists of two L-shaped wood-
framed buildings supported by a common concrete podium. The extremely steep site presents numerous design challenges. Building footings are located below eight distinct building levels, with the concrete podium stepping up the hill. Many portions of the lateral force resisting system are discontinuous to meet the space planning needs for common areas. Most levels of the podium structure utilize a combination of suspended post-tension slab connected to the adjacent slabs-on-grade. A parking garage is located on Level 4, with automated parking stacker equipment. Above the garage, a post-tensioned slab supports a lush courtyard. Additionally, a partial permanent soil nail wall is utilized as an economic alternative to retaining walls where retaining heights are the highest. As a highly non-uniform building, MBC utilized several advanced modeling techniques to capture the seismic behavior of the building. Careful attention was paid to soil-structure interaction and the effects of non-symmetrical soil retaining forces. The end result will be a seamless building that will improve the lives of some of San Francisco’s most deserving families.
