Murphy Burr Curry, Inc. provided structural engineering design services for a new two-story “learning commons” addition with a rooftop playground, above an existing concrete classroom structure, and renovation of the existing building for the Cathedral School for Boys in San Francisco. The project involved minor seismic upgrades to the structure of the existing school, local to the addition, to accommodate increased seismic demands, and to meet the requirements of the California and San Francisco Building Codes in effect at the time of construction. The foundations of the existing building were evaluated and found adequate to support the additional vertical loads, such that no new foundations for the addition were required. The scope also included revisions to column and girder locations for two new entrances, the addition of larger windows, and an infill office for a science suite in the upper school.
The project was also featured in Structure Magazine. CLICK HERE to read the article, “For Constrained Urban Sites, Structure Informs Architecture, ” written by Charles F. Bloszies, SE, FAIA.
