Senior Project Engineers or Senior Structural Engineers (if licensed SE) are seen as technical leaders within our team of creative and talented engineers. They work shoulder-to-shoulder with other industry leaders on innovative and challenging design projects. This position is a long-term career path for highly skilled/technical engineers, or a building block for those looking to grow into MBC’s business development leadership track.

All Senior Project Engineers or Senior Structural Engineers are expected to “think outside of the box” to solve design problems, possess in-depth knowledge and application of the building code, and understand that getting the job done means participating and beginning to oversee the delivery of high-quality work while being mindful of clients’ time and budget constraints. Senior Project Engineers or Senior Structural Engineers report directly to the firm’s Principals and may work alongside or in a dotted-line reporting relationship with MBC Associates and Project Manager / Structural Engineers on a project basis.

Annual compensation for this full-time position ranges from $120,000 to $165,000, based on experience. The job duties, requirements, and benefits of this at-will position are as follows.

 

Job Duties:

  • Perform advanced lateral and gravity analysis and design of structures utilizing wood, steel, masonry, and concrete systems.
  • If appropriate, engage in business development opportunities on behalf of the firm.
  • Manage preparation of project working drawings between more junior engineers, CAD staff, and others.
  • Develop proposals and oversee projects between clients, consultants, and contractors.
  • Use expertise to review and interpret technical documents from other consultants (geotechnical engineering reports, civil engineering plans, etc.).
  • Review shop drawings for compliance with construction contract documents.
  • Conduct site visits and structural observations for work in progress.
  • Issue field instructions and change orders, respond to RFIs, and other CA documentation.
  • Prepare engineering reports based on visual inspections and review of the available building drawings.
  • Provide mentorship for more junior engineers at the firm.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Self-motivated individual with a minimum of 8+ years of directly relevant professional experience in analysis and design of structures for schools, offices, retail stores, warehouses, multi-family housing, etc.
  • BSCE (or related degree) and California CE (or 20+ years practical experience) required. Advanced education and licensure may be considered when determining relevant years of professional experience.
  • Well-versed in seismic design/structural design utilizing steel, concrete, wood, light gage steel, and masonry.
  • Interest in developing leadership, business development, and management experience and has experience and/or understanding with project coordination/management.
  • Strong communication, time management, and technical writing skills.
  • High proficiency in structural modeling and design programs (RISA, ETABS, SAFE, SAP, ADAPT).
  • High proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit.
  • A team player that is interested in beginning to build stakeholder relationships for the firm and can work well with a variety of personalities to achieve mutual goals.
