Project Manager/Structural Engineer Job Description
This key position is part of the MBC leadership team, working alongside the firm’s Principals and Associates to build strong, long-term stakeholder relationships and provide thought-partnership to guide/implement strategic opportunities and growth initiatives for the firm.
On the technical side, a successful Project Manager/Structural Engineer is expected to “think outside of the box” to solve design problems, possess an in-depth knowledge and application of the building code, and understand that getting the job done means displaying strong leadership and overseeing the delivery of high-quality work while being mindful of clients’ time and budgets. Whether managing a project or jumping in to do their own design or calculations, Project Managers/Structural Engineers are team players who aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves.
Annual compensation for this full-time position ranges from $135,000 to $175,000 based on experience. Job duties, requirements, and benefits of this at-will position are as follows.
Job Duties:
- Perform advanced lateral and gravity analysis and design of structures utilizing wood, steel, masonry, and concrete systems.
- Engage in and/or lead business development opportunities alongside MBC’s Principals.
- Develop proposals and oversee projects between clients, consultants, and contractors.
- Manage project budgets and the preparation of project working drawings between staff and others.
- Stamp drawings and serve as Engineer of Record (EOR) on key projects.
- Use expertise to review and interpret technical documents from other consultants (geotechnical engineering reports, civil engineering plans, etc.).
- Review shop drawings for compliance with construction contract documents.
- Conduct site visits and structural observations for work in progress.
- Issue field instructions and change orders, respond to RFIs, and other construction administrative documentation.
- Prepare high-level engineering reports based on visual inspections of the buildings and review of the available building drawings.
- Provide management/mentorship for the firm’s staff engineers.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements & Qualifications:
- Highly knowledgeable and self-motivated individual with 10+ years of professional experience in analysis and design of structures for schools, offices, retail stores, warehouses, multi-family housing, large residences, etc.
- BSCE (or related, specialized degree) and California SE license required.
- Well-versed in seismic design and structural design utilizing steel, concrete, wood, light gage steel, and masonry.
- Demonstrated leadership and management experience, including project coordination and business development.
- Excellent communication, time management, and technical writing skills.
- High proficiency in structural modeling and design programs (RISA, ETABS, SAFE, SAP, ADAPT).
- High proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit.
- A team player who is able to build stakeholder relationships for the firm and work well with a variety of personalities to achieve mutual goals.
