Alan, one of MBC’s co-founders, brings nearly 40 years of professional experience as a structural engineer. He believes in developing long-term relationships with clients, centering their unique needs and goals by providing creative design solutions that are both reliable and cost-effective. Under Alan’s leadership, MBC has grown largely through recommendations and repeat business, underscoring the firm’s commitment to a people-first approach.
Alan has a Master's degree in Structural Engineering, is a registered California Structural Engineer, and is also a licensed Structural Engineer in Hawaii and the United Kingdom. Prior to founding MBC in 1991, Alan worked with Ove Arup and Partners in London and Hong Kong and then Culley Associates (now Holmes) in San Francisco. Throughout his career, Alan has been responsible for the design of a wide range of projects, including:
Historical buildings such as the seismic retrofit and renovation of the Omni Hotel at 500 California Street in San Francisco and the Tannery Arts Center in Santa Cruz.
Numerous seismic evaluations and retrofits for public schools for the San Francisco Unified School District and private schools such as the Town School for Boys in San Francisco and the Community School for Music and Arts in Mountain View
New construction for retail, housing, office and education buildings including Burberry in Beverly Hills, an extension to the University Center for USF San Francisco, single- and multi-family housing including Block 51 at Hunters Point, Fireside Apartments in Mill Valley, 2198 Market Street, San Francisco, and a high-end residence in Hollywood.
Seismic evaluations, retrofits, and Tenant Improvements for corporations including Chevron, Twitter, and Wells Fargo and for nonprofits such as Bridge Housing and TNDC San Francisco.
