The Montgomery Memorial sculpture, "Soaring Flight," was designed by Kent Roberts, chief exhibition design manager at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and engineered by Murphy Burr Curry, Inc. The wing-shaped sculpture is 30 feet tall and built from hollow structural-steel tubes clad with a stainless steel mesh. The connections and splices for the steel tubes are crafted to support the design aesthetics. The memorial is dedicated to John J. Montgomery, the late-19th-century pioneer of controlled glider flight, in San Diego County, CA.
