The historic building complex comprises of a 22 story tall Tribune Tower (1906). Murphy Burr Curry developed a voluntary seismic upgrade strategy that concentrated the bulk of construction within the building comprised of new concrete moment frames and interconnected the two buildings with a series of viscous dampers mounted across the building’s interface. The resulting system brings the building to meet Life Safety requirements while minimizing the pounding and drift demands within the Tower. Majority of the Tower remained tenanted during the construction.
