Murphy Burr Curry performed a seismic evaluation based on the State Historic Building Code to determine the structural requirements for the renovation for the existing wood framed buildings located on the site of the historic Salz Tannery at 1040 River Street in Santa Cruz, California. A retrofit design based on the results of the seismic evaluation, as well as the proposed tenant improvements was performed and completed in 2011. The design scope included the repair and/or strengthening of existing wood roof and floor framing to address additional loading requirements as well as deterioration throughout the buildings. Deficiencies in the building's seismic resisting system were found during the evaluation. Roof diaphragm strengthening and new plywood shear walls, combined with concentric steel braced frames were added to strengthen the building's lateral system.
