Murphy Burr Curry, Inc. oversaw the removal of three interior structural columns supporting the 4th level of an existing five-story shopping center originally constructed in 1964. The client required an open plan design, with increased column spacing from 30' to 60'. The columns to be removed formed part of a space frame resisting both lateral and vertical forces and, in order to consider the strength and stiffness of the altered structure, a complete analysis of the mall block was necessary. The existing steel and concrete structure was strengthened to foundation level.
