In 2008, Murphy Burr Curry, Inc. completed a $5.2 million voluntary seismic retrofit of this five-story, 144,500-square-foot office building made of structural steel and reinforced concrete. The building owners emphasized that the structural scheme must have minimal impact both on the building layout and the current tenants. In response, MBC mounted new steel-braced frames to the exterior of the building's lightwell and placed shear walls at the perimeter property line walls. The result: Continuous floor space within the central building core, undisturbed tenants, and zero operational down time during construction.
